How is age of empires 2 multiplayer gameplay implemented internally?
I noticed that it is common for this game to lag and perform badly during a multiplayer match over the internet. This is surprising as more recent games like Warcraft-3 do not present the same problem even though they have much higher system requirements. Just to rephrase, aoe-2 that has minimal system requirements lags on a good gaming desktop with great network connection while games like Warcraft-3 doesn't. What are the implementation details/choices that cause this?
I am not entirely sure if gaming.stackexchange is the right place for this question. If it isn't, redirection to a better endpoint would be great too.
