According to the Wikipedia page for Space Invaders, the fact that the game speed increases as you clear out the invaders was due to hardware limitations.
The effect has often been listed on top glitches in gaming. The effect is known as a difficulty curve, something that later games have attempted to incorporate through software alone.
What I want to know is - was the difficulty change an actual curve? I understand the speed change was directly linked to the hardware, but was there a point the speed of the invaders became constant? For example, the game state got to a point when the hardware could support it at a constant speed. If not, did the occasional alien ship across the top of the screen reduce the speed of the invaders for a few seconds, and did moving your ship more/shooting more slow down the game?
